On January 12, 2016, Congresswoman Madeline Z. Bordallo from Guam introduced legislation in the US Congress seeking help for Guam, CNMI, and Hawaii for social services impacted by Compact migrants from FSM, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. While this is not a new attempt to have the federal government provide funding to the local governments, the tone of her speech on the Senate floor seems much more positive in the support for COFA migrants in the US. During the speech, Congresswoman Bordallo validated the positive impact of COFA migrants saying, “COFA migrants make a positive contributions to our community, but insufficient support from the federal government causes a significant social, economic strain on our island communities.” Read more>
